Cartographies of Thought
“Kingdom – Phylum – Class – Order – Family – Genus – Species.
Where do we attempt to anchor ourselves?
Sitting by the river and looking at a stone, I imagine the final destination of the odyssey humanity is truly meant to undertake.”
Cha Kiyoul’s work is not simply drawing; it is a philosophical cartography of thought. His practice maps the invisible strata where memory, consciousness, and existence intersect. Rather than representing objects or narratives, Cha’s drawings trace the subtle terrains formed by human perception and reflection.
In contemporary art, the boundaries between disciplines have long dissolved. The history of modern and contemporary art has already produced countless experiments questioning the direction and purpose of artistic form. For Cha Kiyoul, however, the question shifts. It is no longer merely about where art itself is heading, but rather about where human thought seeks to anchor itself within an ever-expanding field of experience.
Historically, drawing occupied a subordinate position within the hierarchy of visual art, serving primarily as preparation for painting or sculpture. Yet since the late twentieth century — particularly in the wake of postmodern thought — drawing has emerged as an autonomous field capable of carrying complex conceptual weight. In an age increasingly shaped by digital technology, artificial intelligence, and virtual environments, the recovery of the body and the hand becomes a critical artistic inquiry. Cha’s work responds directly to this condition. His drawings reaffirm the unique capacity of the human hand to register thought, memory, and time.
The essential quality of his drawing lies in its immediacy and raw presence. Lines unfold across the surface with a vitality reminiscent of the gestural ink traditions of East Asian literati painting, where emotion and energy permeate the movement of the brush. Within this interplay of spontaneity and deliberate control, the unconscious and the conscious converge. The drawing becomes not merely an image but a performative trace of thinking itself.
For Cha Kiyoul, artistic practice is not concerned with depicting the outward form of things. Instead, it seeks to sense the internal energy embedded within matter and the temporal layers accumulated within experience. Thoughts flow like a river; emotional and physical energies shift continuously with the conditions of the moment. His drawings operate as records of this flow — archaeological traces of consciousness and memory.
The automatism explored by early twentieth-century Surrealists once sought access to the unconscious as a source of creativity. Cha’s work extends this lineage while grounding it in a contemplative discipline. Through repetitive gestures and intuitive mark-making, he allows latent memories and sensations to surface on the page. Chance and intention coexist, producing compositions that reveal the subtle rhythms of inner life.
What emerges from this process is not an image in the conventional sense, but a cartography of thought. The lines that accumulate across Cha’s surfaces resemble sedimented traces of memory and perception, forming layered structures that echo geological or biological systems.
Ultimately, his work returns to a fundamental question:
Where do we come from?
Where are we moving?
And where, finally, do we seek to anchor ourselves?
Cha Kiyoul’s drawings unfold as quiet yet profound maps of this ongoing human odyssey.
